| Bube, Page Karten veraltet. Daneben aber stellen die Hofkarten häufig die unterschiedlichen Einflüsse oder Anwendungen der Elemente dar. Es war zunächst der Golden Dawn, der den Hofkarten die vier Elemente zugeordnet und ihnen auch neue Namen gab:
Daraus ergibt sich beispielsweise, dass der König/Ritter der Stäbe Feuer vom Feuer ist, die Karte also unter anderem ausgesprochene Willenskraft und Dynamik symbolisiert. Der König/Ritter der Münzen dagegen ist nach diesem System Feuer der Erde und steht unter anderem für den Willen, materielle Dinge zu erreichen. Wie üblich beim Tarot gibt es auch Systeme, welche die Zuordnung anders vornehmen. Dies ist allerdings die häufigste. Die meisten heutigen Tarot-Systeme benutzen eine Mischung aus diesen beiden Systemen, in unterschiedlichen Gewichtungen, was die Hofkarten grade für Anfänger oft zu den am schwierigsten zu erlernenden Karten macht. Einen gänzlich anderen Ansatz stellte Rachel Pollacj 1994 im Shining Women Tarot vor. Dort ist die Darstellung als Personen gänzlich aufgegeben worden, und die Hofkarten heißen Ort, Wissende/Wissender, Gabe und Sprecher des Elements der jeweiligen Farbe. Der Ort repräsentiert etwa das Potential des Elements, oder einen Ort der Begegnung mit dem Element. Der Wissende steht für das Verständnis des Elements, und dessen Bedeutung für das eigene Leben. Die Gabe kann für ein vertieftes Verständnis des Elements stehen oder dafür, dass man ein Geschenk dieses Elements enthält; bei den Stäben (Feuer) beispielsweise etwa die Kraft, etwas bestimmtes zu tun. Und der Sprecher schließlich steht für die Fähigkeit, das Element aktiv anwenden zu können, oder dessen Energie an andere weitergeben zu können. ZahlenkartenEs gibt grundsätzlich zwei Möglichkeiten, die Zahlenkarten zu interpretieren. Die eine Möglichkeit ist, die Bedeutung des Elements (Farbe) mit der numerlogischen Bedeutung der Zahl zu verknüpfen; die andere ist es, jeder einzelnen Zahlenkarte eine eigene Bedeutung zuzuweisen. Meist beruhen diese eigenständigen Bedeutungen aber mindestens teilweise auf der Kombination von Element und Bedeutung der Zahl; oder sie haben sich aus solchen Deutungen entwickelt. Bei Decks oder Systemen, in denen dies nicht der Fall ist, sind Gemeinsamkeiten nicht zu entdecken. Aus diesem Grunde beschränkt sich dieser Artikel auf eine kurze Darstellung der Methode der Kombination aus Element und Bedeutung der Zahl. Der Zahlenwert 1 entspricht den Ass-Karten. Aus den jeweiligen Bedeutungen von Zahl und Farbe ergibt sich dann durch Kombination die Bedeutung der jeweiligen Karte.
